More than 30 years together and still rocking. This is Space Rock supreme! Who can forget the sun setting over the stage at Glastonbury all those years ago as this unknown band took to the stage and thrilled us with music we had never really heard before, and we'd never ever forget again. The band are still touring. The personnel may change (even Ginger Baker of Cream once played drums and Lemmy Kilminster of Motorhead played bass and lead guitar for a while) but the beat stays the same.Lyrics originally by Robert Calvert (the sci-fi author) and later by Dave Brock (the only surviving original member) with a heavy influence of classical poetry (listen out for the stanzas from Longfellow); music with a solid bass and drum beat which can either be calm and melodic (Space is Deep) or a solid thumping rock (Urban Guerilla) with plenty of electronics for the synthesizer fans, this is real road music. Most dedicated Hawkwind fans will have all of these tracks already and it has to be said that this is not the best compilation album, but at this price it has to be a "must buy" for the new listener, the inquisitive, or those of you who only remember "Silver Machine" (the single which hit the British charts in 1972).
