I thought I knew a lot about '40's and '50's roots music, but for some reason, I missed Wynonie Harris until I heard "Keep on Churnin' ('Til the Butter Comes)" one day on the radio.I immediately went home and ordered this CD and haven't stopped playing it since. The recordings on this are excellent quality and the band is phenomenal -- I understand Illinois Jacquet plays sax on many of the cuts, which adds even more.Harris' voice is smooth, rough, varied and oh-so-soulful -- a way better voice than any rocker I can think of. He was supposedly the guy Elvis took inspiration from -- "race music", they called it -- and some of the lyrics are definitely racy, but in another way, with double meanings, if you get my drift.Definitely the roots of rock here, with some absolutely jump-jivin' tunes that will get even the dead up and moving. This is some of the best popular/early rock music you'll ever hear, definitely get this CD!
