This book was published in 1996 and the designs appear slightly dated. It has excellent information regarding the equipment and conditions necessary for successful machine trapunto and seems geared for the beginning quilter. While the book pictures every kind of darning foot you will ever find, it does not show the more modern (and similar) free motion quilting feet available now. While the book does recommend the sturdy Schmetz jeans/denim needle, it does not really address needle breakage, which could occur given the very thick quilts which might result using this technique. The book contains practice exercises, shows what mistakes might occur and contains patterns and ideas. Some of the design are a little dated, others still look very useful. The instructions for the trapunto technique are very good. The book is divided into six lessons and contains 21 full-size patterns.Hari Walner's 1999 book Exploring Machine Trapunto New Dimensions contains additional more complicated designs and full size patterns, but not as much information on the basics. I also liked Diane Gaudynski's Quilt Savvy Machine Quilting Guidebook, which contains a good ideas for trapunto and machine quilting beginner - intermediate quilts.
