Clever storyline making good use of post-war Jerusalem as a complex backdrop for a fast paced story. The author is very economical with historical background facts but ekes out just enough for the reader to keep reading and making the book hard to put down. The story also sees migration from an impoverished Europe through Ceuta in North Africa to the Middle East. Migration in reverse compared with today serves as a reminder that the world is more dynamic and chaotic across a century than it might seem from the comfort of a western country.AIs wanting to be human is a standard sci-fi trope - look no further than Star Trek's character Data who most of the time seems like a comedic Pinocchio type prop. But in this book the AI protagonist is exploring and developing her humanity not from a position of logical strength but from human weakness. That comes across very believable and feels to me like quite a unique take on the problem.I thoroughly enjoyed this romp through future Jerusalem. The ending leaves options for the story to continue. If there ever was a sequel I’d definitely pick it up.
